McDonald’s E. Coli Outbreak in October 2024 has caused a stir considering that around 25 million people eat at McDonald’s across the U.S. each day.
This outbreak, linked with McDonald’s Quarter Pounders and slivered onions, has forced about 20% of McDonald’s U.S. restaurants, or around 2,700 locations, to stop serving these food products, according to sources at Yahoo Finance.
Escherichia coli, or E. coli, is a common bacteria, but certain types can make you sick. Infections can occur after someone swallows the bacteria, often when consuming contaminated food or water.
McDonald’s E. Coli Outbreak has had at least 49 cases of illnesses reported across 10 states, with one fatality involving an elderly person. Ten individuals have been hospitalized, including a child who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication associated with E. coli infections. The majority of the cases are concentrated in Colorado and Nebraska.
Most of the people who became ill reported eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounder sandwiches, the CDC says. The fast-food giant promptly pulled the two ingredients (Quarter Pounder’s and onions) from affected restaurants when the number of reported cases was still low.
Many are drawing comparisons to Chipotle’s infamous E. coli outbreak, which hit multiple ingredients between 2015 and 2018 and led to a $25 million fine from the FDA.
McDonald’s is pushing back on these comparisons, emphasizing the smaller number of cases and suggesting the issue is likely confined to just two ingredients, possibly upstream in the supply chain. The CDC has also stated that no other ingredients seem to be affected.
According to the FDA, McDonald’s has removed the slivered onions and quarter-pound patties from stores in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming and portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma. In other states, Quarter Pounder burgers may not be available.
However, the CDC also notes that the outbreak may go beyond those states.
Symptoms of an E. coli infection can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, typically starting three to four days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without treatment within a week, some may develop serious kidney issues and need hospitalization.
